News, STARS, PfA, Bikes & the new Library Takes Shape – from John & the PHS Team! Friday 6th June 2025
Welcome to 网红黑料社 School's Whole School Blog!
Hi everyone,
Well, we鈥檙e back, with school starting again after the May half term. Hope that feels good for you. It鈥檚 certainly very nice indeed to be back 鈥 it鈥檚 a great half term, although there鈥檚 always huge amounts to do in terms of finishing the year off and preparing for the next one. Lots of transitions! People are underway with planning
We have a new library emerging, and a new student social area just as you come in, so you鈥檒l see it when you visit. It鈥檚 lovely and really important to keep striving to get new things built, added or updated 鈥 and already have the next two things on my list! We all just want the school to be as good as it can be
There are great Online Safety and Family Liaison Blogs too, and a lot of really interesting PfA information on the website 鈥 so a lot to read if you鈥檙e so minded. Otherwise, please do have a peruse of this one 鈥 there are great articles on girls football, fishing, stars, some great lessons, trips & all sorts! Something for everyone!
Have a lovely weekend, thanks for all your support, and we鈥檒l be here on Monday to carry on having a lovely time in June
All the best!

We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development

Literacy
Becky, our Literacy Specialist Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it鈥檚 OK, she鈥檒l be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts!
THE NEW LIBRARY & STORY CLUB!
Well, a very exciting start to this half term for the Literacy Team as we have the beginnings of a new library space! School was a very busy place over the half term holiday as the library and KS4 social areas had their makeover, with the maintenance team working alongside the library installers
Staff and students throughout school have been working together this week to help with the less exciting job of removing all the old labels from our books, ready for the new ‘categories’ system we’ve created based on student feedback. Whilst I fully appreciate how boring a job that is (and to read about!) it’s another important little step towards us getting the library right for our students. It’s important to reflect on what works and anything that we could do differently, and it feels right to mix things up a little bit!
In other news this week ELTBA students had their first ‘Story Club’ as on option for Monday’s lunch time club, hosted in Strachan’s Den. We read ‘Lost & Found’ by Oliver Jeffers and the students then had the chance to join with a range of drawing or writing activities, with some students taking a ‘book review’ sheet to complete. This club will run through the rest of summer term, with students getting to hear some of our new stories, have opportunities for writing for pleasure and also just chill and chat about books! More news on all of that in the coming weeks.
Happy Reading!
Physical Development
Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week.
GIRLS FOOTBALL!!!
Huge shout out to the amazing students who have been attending the Newcastle United Football Foundation community event throughout the year and achieving a winner鈥檚 trophy for the league for the season plus winning the day cup
Most importantly we have seen improvements in all areas, especially with girls working more as a team, showing resilience amongst all other elements of the T.R.E.D.S principles.
Well done girls at 网红黑料社!

Personal Development
One of the best things about the school and one of the most important for our pupils, PD covers PSHE, Wellbeing, Careers, Social Moral Spiritual & Cultural, Online Safety, Behaviour and similar areas. Jo pulls it all together. Let鈥檚 see what Jo and the team have in store for us this week! The inspectors really loved all of the PD we do!
THE ENVIRONMENT & GRTHAM
Wellbeing
4CH love it that the weather is finally getting better, we all feel so happy when we can go out and visit different places in the area. We have recently been to The Rising Sun Country Park; Springfield Park; Pet鈥檚 Corner; and Killingworth Lake. The sunshine helps to make us feel happy too! We are always looking for new places to visit so if anyone has a favourite place then let us know!
SMSC
World Environment Day
In 2LL, we have been looking at how to look after our environment. We worked together to create a big mind map on different ways that we can take care of our local area. We then worked on making our own posters 馃槉. We had some great ideas!
JT- Don鈥檛 put rubbish in the river
SH- Take your water bottles home
SK- Don鈥檛 pull leaves off the trees
HT- Put rubbish in the bin
IW- Don鈥檛 start fires outside
RH- Don鈥檛 leave rubbish it might harm animals
In 3TW pupils produced work following a visit from a recycling company and worked in small groups to think about ways people could look after the environment. Pupils sorted rubbish and enjoyed creating posters after watching short videos about how their environment is being destroyed. Pupils were highly motivated to get clear messages across in picture form.
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month
4KR learnt about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month today. They discovered that the GRT community have contributed to many aspects of culture across the world, including Flamenco dance, jazz and folk music. Here is a poster the class created, of some of their new knowledge to increase awareness and celebrate GRTHM.
6LCWMM spent SMSC this week looking at World Environment Day. This links into their recent work around their local environment. Students looking at actions they could take to help their environment such as litter picking, turning off water and turning off lights when they leave a room.
Students then completed a picture hunt, finding items of litter in pictures.
They were very good at spotting which items were out of place, very well done!
Wellbeing
Here are Andy and the Wellbeing Team about what鈥檚 happening this year in their brilliant Connect Challenge series! Go Andy!
鈥淐onnect Challenge鈥
This week, our Connect Challenge highlighted the importance of taking time for ourselves in our busy lives, reminding students and staff that rest isn鈥檛 a reward, it鈥檚 necessary
This was particularly important this week for those of our students who have been busy revising and sitting their GCSE maths exams. Many students enjoyed meaningful moments with friends, while others appreciated relaxing activities like reading or crafting
On Thursday afternoon, one student took the challenge so seriously, he took a nap on the mats on the classroom floor – excellent work that man! These experiences not only offered a welcome break from the busy week but also positively impacted their mental health, encouraging relaxation, creativity, and a sense of belonging. By prioritising self-care, we can enhance our resilience and happiness, allowing us to face life鈥檚 challenges.
Stay tuned for another insightful Connect Challenge next week鈥︷煒 Namaste!
In the meantime here are some photos from the Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme of belonging from the Resilience Framework.
Understanding children鈥檚 rights and building a culture of belonging is essential for promoting good mental health. When children feel respected and valued, they thrive academically and socially, so let’s continue to champion these rights and create an inclusive environment where every student feels they truly belong!
Lesson of the Week 鈥 Money with The Robins!
Russell鈥檚 class The Robins are a super class, and have been learning about money. Let鈥檚 have a look!
The Robins of 4RR have been developing their knowledge and skills with regard to money
Russell is particularly pleased with Leon who has been learning to identify coins and notes, and Patrick who has learned to calculate the value of sets of 1p and 2p coins
Well done Leon & Patrick, and all The Robins!
Talkin bout money money!
Trip of the Week!
At the Quayside with Hannah & her class! Let鈥檚 hear from her
As part of our ‘outdoors’ topic, we visited the Quayside this week
The students enjoyed taking in their surroundings, going over the different bridges (especially the bumpy side of the Millennium Bridge!) and having lunch in the sun at The Baltic. After lunch, the students watched the bridge tilt to let a boat pass underneath. The students used individualised communication methods whilst on the trip and when back to school to comment on their thoughts and feelings about the trip
They all really enjoyed themselves and overall it was a lovely day! We are so excited for our next trip in a couple of weeks time! 馃檪
Fishing Trip of the Week!
Richard has gone fishing!
This week 4 students went to Kielder Water for the Jack Charlton fishing competition.
Brandon even managed to catch a live Jamie which he was very pleased with.
Well done to Nikhit, Brandon, Patrick and Ayaan for the perseverance and patience that they showed. We even managed to catch some fish!!!
Therapy Star of the Week! Dylan R!
Love Therapy Star of the Week! Especially when it鈥檚 Dylan R! Let鈥檚 hear from Amelia!
Therapy star of the week is Dylan!
He has worked incredibly hard to make choices using his symbol book and has shown great focus and determination using an eye gaze device, creating this lovely picture with his eyes! A wonderful example of his creativity and communication skills. Well done Dylan!
Father鈥檚 Day Star of the Week 鈥 Nat W!!!
Nat from Beth鈥檚 class, the student council representative for that class, has been a star too
Nat has been allocated the important role of creating a poster to advertise our school Father鈥檚 Day sale.听As you can see from the morning message from home he has 鈥榖riefed his design team and they are on it!鈥
Well done, Nat! Fathers Day STAR!!!

Early Years 鈥 The Ducklings!
Let鈥檚 get the latest update from what鈥檚 been happening down in the fabulous Early Years, hear from Kerry, and also see some lovely pictures which show what sort of a week they鈥檝e had and what they鈥檝e been up to
Fun week in Early Years…
The week started with the painting of our beehive during outdoor learning. One of our parents asked if we would like the opportunity to paint a beehive for his bees and of course we said yes! We decided to go with a black and yellow theme, as you can see everyone got messy – look out for the final result next week.
We have enjoyed playing outdoor this week in the sand, with our new exploration tray and the water wall – lots of great filling, emptying and getting wet.
We have been in the small gym on the trampoline, and the swing and using some of the gym equipment in the fitness suit
We have explored number this week with number recognition games and number songs using the computer to take turns choosing songs.
UNICEF Award update with Rebecca
Since we gained the Bronze level of this award, Rebecca & the teams have been working on the next level
This week I wanted to share with you some of the work that the pupils did as part of our Resilience Day before the half term holiday.听 Pupils worked in their classes to talk about the UN Rights of the Child, and which Rights they felt applied most to their classes.听 The classes then created a class charter about the rights they would be focussing on for the rest of the school year.
After this, each area of school held an assembly to discuss the work that we did and classes talked about their class charters and what they had found out on the day.
Have a look at some of the examples from across school.
