Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 10th October 2025
Welcome to 网红黑料社 School's Family Liaison Blog!
10.10.25
We are well into the term now, with just 2 weeks left until half term. It has been a long one and I hope that your children/young people have settled. Today is 鈥淲ear it yellow鈥 day with many students and staff wearing shades of yellow. It is the first resilience day of the year and voluntary donations will go to Young Minds.

We鈥檝e had most of the departmental coffee and catch ups with the last one next week. We also have the first of 6 Parent Forum for Preparation for Adulthood this month. See the events section. I omitted the time of this event on my letter; a revised version is attached.
Events:
Week beginning Monday 13th October: MOVE to Spooks week in school.
Tuesday 14th October 14-15.00: LSTE departmental coffee afternoon. Classes 2LT, 3BE, 4CH, 5AH and 5HF are involved.
Wednesday 22 October 9.30-11.00: Parent Forum for parents of students in Year 7 and above.
Ease into: North Tyneside
I have been asked to share the attached letter with our families. Just a reminder that the holiday food vouchers changed in the summer, letter is also attached. There will be no vouchers this half term. The first of two vouchers for this academic year will be provided before the Christmas holidays. The second one will be for the summer holidays. If you are on a low income, think you may be eligible and are not receiving vouchers please contact me.
There is also access, via ease into to some holiday activities. You will first need to register. Details are in the letter. Some will be SEND appropriate. As always I appreciate your feedback on any information I share with you.

Online Safety
The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading 鈥淧arent and carers area鈥, then 鈥渙nline safety鈥 from the dropdown menu.

Information
Universal Credit: Credit only and Work Capability Assessment.
I found this easy-to-read guide on a Facebook group and thought I would share it.
听To apply for New Style Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) “credits only” for a disabled 17-year-old, you must make a claim for them, as a 16 or 17-year-old cannot claim Universal Credit yet. This claim will start the Work Capability Assessment process to establish their Limited Capability for Work (LCW), which is often necessary for a Universal Credit claim later. Apply by calling the Jobcentre Plus new claims helpline and explain you want to make a “credits only” claim for a child with a disability who is affected by their health condition.
Steps to Apply
Confirm eligibility: A 16 or 17-year-old can apply for New Style ESA.
Prepare information: Gather details about the child’s disability or health condition, such as medical evidence like a fit note.
Call the new claims helpline: Contact Jobcentre Plus at 0800 055 6688.
State the purpose: Clearly state that you want to make a “credits only” claim for New Style ESA because you believe their health condition limits their ability to work.
Request a Work Capability Assessment: The “credits only” claim is used to initiate the assessment process to determine if the child has a limited capability for work.
Why a “Credits Only” Claim is Important
Establishes LCW: This is a way to get a formal decision about the child’s limited capability for work before they might become eligible for other benefits like Universal Credit.
Future Benefit Claims: A confirmed LCW decision from the ESA claim will be binding for future Universal Credit claims.
Timing: Start the claim as early as possible, as the Work Capability Assessment can take several months to complete.
Important Considerations
Medical Evidence: You will need to provide medical evidence to support the claim that the disability or health condition limits the ability to work.
Assessment Rate: While the claim is being assessed, the child will typically receive the “assessment rate” of ESA, which is a lower payment.
Contact Support: If you don’t receive the required questionnaire or are unsure about the process, contact the helpline number provided on your ESA letter to confirm your claim is being processed.
You can also tell the JobCentre that you want to protect their National Insurance credits. There is a wealth of information on Contact-for families of disabled children on this, and other benefits.

Activities
With half term just 2 weeks away, here is what I know about activities over this period. You should also check out the HAF (household activity and food fund) in your Local Offer. This is additional funding provided to Local Authorities to support those on low incomes die to the high cost of living. There may be some activities open to children/young people with SEND as those with an EHCP fall under the vulnerable category.

We are excited to be launching a series of new SEND Fun Sessions at Gateshead.
These sessions will feature the use of the soft play room, sensory room, movement room and access to outdoor space (depending on the weather of course!)
Sessions are for children aged between 4-10 years; siblings are welcome too.

Tim Lamb Centre:
To access the Tim Lamb Centre, located in the Rising Sun Country Park behind Asda in Benton you must get a family membership. This costs 拢20 for a year and there are additional charges per child participating in an event or using their facilities. Their outdoor play area is wonderfully accessible, with a wheelchair accessible swing and roundabout and accessible pathways.
Here are the links to the website and membership forms
Keep an eye on their Facebook page as more activities may be added for half term. I will check again over the next 2 weeks. Here鈥檚 the link to their Facebook page:
Don’t stress about finding and carving a pumpkin…leave the stress for us.
For only 拢5 children can find their pumpkin, carve it and enjoy stay and play 10-1pm.

Alpha Boxing:
I heard Andy being interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle and asked for information. Alpha Boxing is in Leadgate, Co Durham. All staff have DBS. The gym is on the first floor, so not accessible to those with mobility challenges. There is also a small sensory room there too for those who need it. Contact details:
鈥淎lpha Boxing CIC was established in March 2025 to address the lack of tailored support and opportunities available for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
We were found in recognition of these gaps in provision, and it was also inspired by the journey of Soul Connor, who has autism. His experiences highlighted the pressing need for inclusive sporting activities where young people can feel supported, valued, and empowered. He continues to thrive and is a confident, happy content little boy.
At Alpha Boxing CIC, we are proud to deliver a range of opportunities designed to meet these needs:
鈥 Free SEND Group Sessions 鈥 open to all young people with SEND, these sessions focus on building confidence, improving fitness, and developing life skills within a safe and structured environment.
鈥 1-to-1 Personalised Sessions 鈥 available at 拢25 per session, offering tailored coaching and individual support to meet specific needs and goals.
Our sessions are built around the core principles of discipline, respect, and structure, which boxing naturally encourages. At the same time, we ensure the sessions remain fun, engaging, and enjoyable, so that every participant feels motivated and supported. This balance helps young people to improve both physically and mentally, while learning valuable life skills in a positive setting.
What makes our sessions different is the balance we create between discipline and fun. Boxing naturally encourages respect, focus, and self-control 鈥 skills that are valuable both inside and outside the gym. At the same time, our coaches ensure sessions are full of energy, positivity, and enjoyment, so every young person leaves feeling proud and motivated.
Our vision at Alpha Boxing CIC is to ensure that every young person, regardless of their abilities, has access to positive, meaningful opportunities through sport. We are committed to breaking down barriers, promoting inclusion, and helping SEND children and young people reach their full potential鈥.
