This week鈥檚 online safety blog focuses on understanding the dark web, what it is, why our students might try and access it and how parents can support their children from home!

So many are restricted to children, with cut off ages of 18/19, but I will state this in the links. If there is something specific you wish to apply for, and it鈥檚 not here, please get in touch with me and I will try to support. I鈥檝e covered the main two this week. Others to follow next week. The Family Fund:

The Family Fund has 2 grants relevant to our students:

England 鈥� Support for Families with Disabled Children (SFDC). This is open to families on a low income who are raising a child aged 17 or under with a disability. You can apply every 24 months, and the link is below:

Your Opportunity (18-24 years). This grant aims to enhance the life of disabled or seriously ill young adults who are living at home. This grant is limited and on a first come basis, it is for low-income families and can be applied for every 12 months, and the link is below:

The grants cover a range of things including kitchen appliances, activities, days out, family breaks, computers and tablets, clothing, sensory toys and specialist trikes as examples. Family breaks are not available in the Your Opportunity grant.

The Sunshine Fund

The Sunshine fund grants are open to families of children aged 0-19 with disabilities, additional needs, chronic and critical illness. It is open to those living in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Co. Durham. This grant is not means tested and can be used for equipment which cannot be obtained via statutory services. You can apply every 12 months. Letters of support from professionals will be required.

There are quarterly application meetings, so the deadlines for applications are in February, May, August and October. It takes up to 12 months to process, but timescales cannot be guaranteed. No government funding is provided, this grant depends on local support.

We have been asked to share this event with parents/carers of students who are funded by Newcastle City Council LA.

Spotlight on The Alan Shearer Centre

This week I visited the Alan Shearer Centre, a place I was very familiar with some years ago. I regularly share information and wanted to see it for myself. To be honest, I was blown away by some of the changes. It is more suitable for younger children as, although there are lots of adaptations suitable for wheelchair users the corridors are narrow. There are lots of rooms, but these are small, and most will only take 1-3 people. I was welcomed by Pauline and, as there were no other parents at the coffee morning which they arranged for Carer鈥檚 Week I had a fully guided tour. I also spoke with Adrian and Peter, the gardeners. The gardens are lovely, well maintained and the gardener told me they try to leave daisies in situ when they mow the lawn as they have visiting rabbits, foxes, deer and squirrels.

The Immersive Room.

This would take 3-4 children and has a computerised wall display. There鈥檚 also a floor one. There are different themes along with scents and wind machines. These are optional; the wind machine is quite noisy.

Gaming Room.

This contains an Xbox and Nintendo Switch. The table height is adjustable; along with an Xbox controller is a joystick and mechanisms to operate with feet or head. So impressive. Games are pre-installed, and users cannot bring their own games or connect online with others.

Music Room.

This is being re-vamped but there is a keyboard, guitar and some other instruments. There is, as in other rooms Bluetooth connection to play your own music.

Sensory Rooms:

There are more than one. One has a bed with overhead tracking. In fact, quite a few of the rooms do. These have different sensory lights, bubble tunes etc.

The Quiet Room:

This is for those who simply want to chill out. A comfy sofa, cushions, weighted blanket and the room lighting can be changed. There鈥檚 a Bluetooth connection for those who want to play music.

Sensory Cave:

This is not a bookable area, simply a corridor with lots of interactive wall displays. For large wheelchairs this could be a bit of a challenge. The building is old and there isn鈥檛 much that can be done about it. However, the displays are targeted at younger children.

The Art Room:

They have regular art sessions on a Saturday. They also have activities which are art related, with colouring sheets etc.

Hydrotherapy Pool.

This is bookable for 1 hour to include changing with the last session on school days 3.30-4.30. They have moved to an online booking system and reduced the number of sessions that can be booked to once every 14 days. I am aware of booking issues and have raised it with them. I鈥檝e been told they will continue to monitor.

Changing Place: There is a changing place and other accessible toilet facilities.

There is a caf茅 with a good variety of sandwiches, cakes, biscuits and drinks.

Outdoor Play Area:

This has been modernised and there is a wheelchair accessible swing. There鈥檚 also a roundabout which could, with support be accessed by a small wheelchair. The paths are accessible and there is plenty of choice in terms of play equipment.

Woodland Walk:

A recent addition, this is accessed via a gate off the car park. It is a relatively small trail but is wheelchair accessible and is some interactive equipment along the trail. There is also a shaded picnic area, but the pigeons like it, so you can imagine how clean it is! There鈥檚 a story corner too.

Timba Time:

These sessions are on the 3^rd Sunday of each month and must be pre booked.

The Centre is in a cul-de-sac and access is gated. I feel it鈥檚 a safe space for very active children with limited awareness of danger. I am told the afternoons are quieter. Rooms must be booked online and are limited to 3 sessions a month. Membership of The Alan Shearer Centre is free as are the activities which makes it popular. They also offer some activity days in school holidays.

Thanks for your donations; please keep them coming my way and let鈥檚 make this the best Summer Fayre ever. There will be face painting, popcorn, candy floss, cake stall, tombolas, a raffle, Blood bikes, Smile Through Sport, Community Police, games, a BBQ, food and fun. We鈥檝e got some excellent raffle prizes including a family day at the Alnwick Garden, Champagne (Moet & Chandon), Afternoon tea and the Crowne Plaza, Hampers, A Scream for Pizza gift voucher, 拢50 Morrisons voucher and more. Raffle tickets will only be available to purchase at the fayre.

We have some stalls selling crafts, dog accessories and treats, Children鈥檚 toys, gifts, Usborne Books and more. There will be forms to join next year鈥檚 FoPHS 100 club and recycled uniform.

It鈥檚 usually a great day out and a chance for parents to meet other families and students to see each other too.

We would greatly appreciate donations of cakes for the cake stall. Please clearly label with ingredients.

Classes are making good use of the National Trust membership and Metro pass.

Great North Run:

Team Robinson: my husband Richard and daughter Aisling are doing the GNR 2025 for FoPHS. Niall and I will support the fundraising team at South Shields as we have done since 2004. Wow, 21 years. Please consider sponsoring them as they must raise a minimum of 拢700. They have paid 拢128 entry fees between them. This will be Richard鈥檚 13^th GNR and Aisling鈥檚 5^th for 网红黑料社. I am hoping that this year they manage to avoid knee injuries which held them up last year.
