Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 6th June 2025
Welcome to 网红黑料社 School's Family Liaison Blog!
06.06.25
I hope that you made the best of the lovely weather (mostly) in half term. The last one will fly past as there is so much going on. Summer Fayre, Prom, MOVE summer event and This is Me Festival for a start.
It鈥檚 just 3 weeks till the summer fayre and I hope that you, your family and friends will come along. Those of you who visit school will notice our new catchy banners on the railings outside school. There will be games, stalls, a BBQ and food. We know that it is difficult for families to meet, given the wide catchment area we cover, so this is a chance to meet other families in a place your children/young people are familiar. You will also be supporting the FoPHS which makes a difference to your child鈥檚 school experience.

Events
There are exciting plans in the last half term, so keep an eye on the blogs for details.
Friday 13th June: Father鈥檚 Day sale (Student Council). Please could students who wish to buy a gift bring 拢3 with them on the day?
Saturday 21st June: 11-14.00 FoPHS Summer Fayre
Tuesday 24th June: 9.30-11.00. Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) Parent forum.
Here are links to the calendars:

Online Safety
The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading 鈥淧arent and carers area鈥, then 鈥渙nline safety鈥 from the dropdown menu.
It is below.
The blog this week is a survey for parents- to gain an insight into their understanding of Online Safety, how useful the blog is, how it could be improved, any other ways we can support parents with aspects of Online Safety.

Information
Let鈥檚 revisit Preparing for Adulthood.
We know that thinking of your child鈥檚 future, when they leave school and later college is daunting. Many of our students鈥 needs differ to those of their mainstream peers and for that reason, thinking about their futures needs careful thought and planning. However, they do get older, their needs change and when they are adults some things change. Over the past academic year Hannah Fuller and I, along with other staff have been working hard, gathering views from staff and parents/carers, then looking at the information you need to support your child as they become older.
We set up a PfA Parent Forum and our next one will be on Tuesday 24th June. A copy of the letter is below.

Activities
This week, I thought it might be worth looking at discounts, accessibility which may be helpful to families planning days out.
I realise that I will have covered some before, but there are updates, and we have a lot of families new to school and others whose children may be ready to try new activities.
A lot of places will allow a carer free of charge. Check before you go; if you click the accessibility link on a venue website it should include the information and any听eligibility criteria. This should include any documentation you may need to present or upload.
I鈥檓 so pleased to see that more and more places have a 鈥淐hanging Place鈥, essential to those who are wheelchair users.
Here are links which may help:
CEA Card
The Cinema Exhibitors card is available to people aged 5 years or older who have a disability. It enables a carer to attend with them free of charge. The card holder pays the normal admission fee.
See the link below for details
Max Card
The Max card is a discount card for looked after children or those with SEND. Families can use this card at venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission. They are provided by Local Authorities and selected charities.
Find out more here:
Disabled person鈥檚 bus pass
Contact your local authority to apply for a concessionary bus pass.
If your child/young person cannot access without the support of another person (this will apply to most of our students) you need to apply for a 鈥渃ompanion鈥 version. This allows an escort to travel with them free of charge. It is especially important for those in Key Stage 4 and above as it helps prepare them for life after school, enables school staff to support with supported independent travel training.
Theatres
Theatres, in the last 10 years or so have introduced their own discount scheme.
Theatre Royal, Newcastle
This theatre, as a grade 2 listed building does not have a 鈥渃hanging place鈥; it does have wheelchair spaces and they have relaxed performances, performances with adaptations/support for those with visual or hearing impairments and they welcome assistance dogs.
Free companion tickets are available, subject to eligibility (Middle/High-rate DLA Child, Enhanced rate PIP, certificate of visual impairment) via the access membership scheme.
Tyne Theatre, Newcastle.
This is a grade 1 listed building and does not have a Changing Place. They have a limited number of wheelchair accessible seats in the stalls. They advise that patrons who require access support phone the box office. A free carer ticket may be available subject to meeting eligibility criteria via the box office. The number is 0191 243 1171 and is open Mon-Fri 10 am to 3:30 pm. Alternatively you may email them at info@ttoh.uk
Sunderland Empire
This theatre has wheelchair spaces and offers a range of accessible performances. There is a 鈥淐hanging Place鈥, assistance dogs are welcome (there is a policy you should read before taking yours to the theatre).
Free companion tickets are available for the ATG access membership scheme subject to eligibility. There is also a 33% discount on some tickets for the card holder. There is a long list of documents they will accept which you can find on the link below
Whitley Bay Playhouse
This theatre has a limited number of wheelchair spaces and offers a range of accessible performances. There is a 鈥淐hanging Place鈥 and assistance dogs are welcome.

Custom House, South Shields
This theatre has wheelchair spaces and a 鈥淐hanging Place鈥. It offers a mix of live and cinema performances. A range of adapted performances are on offer.
They have their own access membership, although if you have one for another venue and it is a 鈥渘imbus card鈥 it can be registered with them. They also accept a CEA card as proof which, again must be registered with them. Free companion tickets are available to those who require an assistant. Half-price tickets (maximum of 6) are available to those with a Max card
Darlington Hippodrome
This theatre has wheelchair spaces and a 鈥淐hanging Place鈥. Guide dogs are welcome. A range of accessible performances are available; see website for details.
For those who require an assistant to be able to access the theatre, a free companion ticket is available for those registered with their access scheme. Proof of eligibility will be required. Discounted tickets are available to those on universal or pension credit.

Alan Shearer Centre
I have included this as it is free of charge.
Membership of the Alan Shearer Centre is free, and they have gaming, sensory rooms, a woodland walk, outdoor play area and a hydrotherapy pool. Feedback from parents is that the hydro pool which is free of charge is still impossible to book. I would suggest contacting them directly for guidance as they introduced a new booking system recently; the aim of which was to make it more accessible.
They also have some weekend and holiday activities.
Personal thoughts are that the location is safe for children who are 鈥渞unners鈥.
They also have a caf茅.

Circus Starr Final Call
We have been gifted 50 free Circus tickets for our families
This is on Tuesday 1st July at 7pm. 听It will be held at The Fed, Lancaster Road, Dunston, Gateshead NE11 9JR (very near the Metrocentre). I sent a form out last half term and the final date to complete is Thursday 12th June. This will give me time to check responses and get them to families.
We have over 170 students at school and some families have attended before. I have retained records. The fairest way of making the best use of tickets is:
- Priority will be given to families who have not attended before.
- Maximum of 4 tickets per family.
Please see the link below for further information and complete the form (just one form per family) if you would like to be considered. I will contact you in the week beginning 16h June to let you know if you have been allocated tickets.

FoPHS News
We are getting excited about our summer fayre and have put in a request for lovely weather. Let鈥檚 see if it works!
Plea for help:
To make this a huge success we need donations of:
- Chocolate (lots please for the tombola which the children love) Tombola
- Bottles or cans (alcohol, non-alcoholic, in fact anything in a bottle or can) Tombola
- Gift sets for Tombola and/or raffle
- Raffle prizes
We also need volunteers on the day. I appreciate the demands on our families but if you/a family member or friend could volunteer for 2 hours (more if available) this will make managing the day better. If you can鈥檛 help on the day, could you help on Friday 20th from 13.45 with set up?
Do you, or does someone in your family work for a company that does match funding? If so, would you please contact me to discuss? At the last fayre, we received an additional 拢500 as part match funding from a parent who worked for a bank.
Other news:
Some classes are making use of the School Metro Pass and Educational National Trust membership, both funded by FoPHS. We have agreed, along with the student council to fund some fantastic activities for the This is Me festival in July. We have also allocated funds to support more resources for the Summer MOVE activity day/s. As I am holding a social coffee morning, there will be an opportunity for those who attend to see this in action.
