Deaf Awareness Week 2026: Northern Counties bring BSL to the Tyne Tunnel

A group of fantastic learners from Northern Counties School marked Deaf Awareness Week 2026 with an interactive signing session at , Tyne Tunnels’ Operator.

This year’s theme is 鈥淩ight to understand 鈥 together we break barriers鈥, highlighting the experiences of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, aiming to reduce barriers in everyday life, including social interaction, work, education and access to services.

TT2 staff truly rose to the occasion as they took part in the student-led workshop, engaging in a series of quick-fire sessions to learn how to sign their name, numbers and colours in British Sign Language.

Our learners did a brilliant job at confidently leading the session.

Take a look at how it went!

Shaun Simmons, Chief Operating Officer at TT2 Limited said: 鈥淚t was fantastic to welcome students from the 网红黑料社 Foundation to TT2 to deliver British Sign Language sessions for our colleagues as part of Deaf Awareness Week.

鈥淭he sessions provided an opportunity for our teams to learn new skills and to better understand the importance of inclusive communication.

鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to support the brilliant work the 网红黑料社 Foundation does and to play a small part in promoting greater awareness and inclusion.鈥

Mandy Davison, lead of Northern Counties鈥 Signing Choir and Higher Level Special Support Assistant at the 网红黑料社 Foundation added:

鈥淚t means a great deal to us when an organisation like TT2 takes the time to learn about the Deaf community and how they can offer meaningful support.

鈥淲ith it being Deaf Awareness Week, we want to encourage as many people as possible to think about their communication and how they can help Deaf people feel more included.

鈥淥ur learners had a fantastic time and really enjoyed putting staff to the test on what they鈥檇 been taught!鈥

We’d like to thank the TT2 staff for showing such a keen interest in improving their accessibility and inclusion as a team, and giving our learners the opportunity to showcase their beautiful language.
